Hi there, I was officially diagnosed with PsA whilst 26 weeks pregnant, however I'd had the symptoms for about 2 years prior. My rheum put me on low dose pred which had no effect. I then started Sulfasalazine. It seemed to help during pregnancy but once bubs was born, my symptoms flared. I'm now climbing the treatment hierarchy tree to find what works. But most importantly the treatment has not effected the health of my baby boy and I am also breastfeeding. Obviously I would not escalate treatment for PsA that would jepordise my son's health but might consider once he's weaned from the boob!

Hi all , im confused and would like some advice or help from someone who has been in my situation. Before i start i will just let you know a bit about my story . Ive had psoriasis since i was 11 yrs old then after i had my second child in 2000 i became ill with PA. Which was in almost every joint. I hve been on Methotrexate , sulfasalazine and hydroxychloriquine as a comnbination therapy which seemed to halt the flare and last year we decided to try for a baby and came off methotrexate and hydroxychloriquine just staying on sulfasalazine. In late August after being free of methotrexate for 6 months we caught pregnant but at 7 weeks we miscarried. We tried again and in January 2012 we were pregnant again but miscarried at 17 weeks pregnant . They havent found a reason for either miscrriage but i was told that my immune system might be to blame.

After the last miscarriage in april my bones have gone really bad , as we want to try again we've stayed off methotrexate but the rheumatologist said im ok to take sulfasalazine prednisolone and hydroxychloriquine while we re trying (which im currently on , but its not controled or helped in any way at the moment) i also have a shot of kenalog yesterday so hoping that will kick in and help soon .

Has anyone took similar drugs during pregnancy and had a healthy baby , im so stressed out about it all which isnt helping but im worried if we carry on waiting my bones are just going to get worse. Im 34 at the moment so time isnt really on my side and my husband doesnt have any children of his own , he is step-dad to my children who are 13 nd 12 years old. Ps i didnt have the arthritis with the other children as it came on after my youngest was born

thanks in advance , Nicci

Natalie, I also had my rheumatologist tell me to stop trying until I got my severe flare under control. I came of Humira to start trying, my flare started, took prednisone for a while, but symptoms got worse, came off prednisone, and started Humira again. They keep pushing methotrexate, but I refuse to stop trying. I am simply not a fan of taking such a harsh, dangerous drug. So far, the Humira has helped some, but I'm still having a lot of symptoms. My OB/GYN cleared me to keep trying while on the Humira, but so far, no baby. I kind of feel like the autoimmune flare is preventing us from getting pregnant. Sometimes I wonder if I should have focused on my flare and put off trying like my rheumatologist suggested.

Has anyone started treatment to clear things up prior to trying to start a family? We decided we were ready just before I got diagnosed, and my doctor said no trying until this is all under control. Of course, this broke my heart. I asked her how long she thought it'd be until we could start trying, and she said probably within a year. I don't think it's going to happen. I'm three months in, haven't started biologics yet, and have been off MTX for three weeks due to some other things going on and the pain is back in full force. I can't see that going on biologics for a few months would be any different. If you went on meds to clear it up before kids, how long did it take, and did your pain come right back? I don't want to put it off for a year if the pain will be the same, you know? Just discouraged.

PN, thanks so much for sharing! I'm so sorry you are in pain and that you weren't one of the lucky ones. But, on the other hand, Congratulations!!! I have been off BCPs for one year, but in the worst PsA flare of my life as I stopped taking Humira several months before we started trying. My cycle didn't regulate itself right away, but now things are on track. I'm just afraid my body is too much of a mess right now to make a baby. But, we're working on it. I'm back on meds and starting to feel better, so hopefully that will help. :)

Oh and we got pregnant the first month we tried. I think he looked at me and BAM! lol so for me there were no issues, but my rheaumy said Psa should not cause issues with conception. Some medications that you may be on could interfere, but I was on Plaquenil and that doesn't affect conception like others can. Good luck on baby making!!

I wouldn't say they were under control, but definitely improving. I was off of my medication just two months before we conceived. My doctor said 6 months was the safest, but if we found out we were pregnant I could just stop the medication then and everything should be fine. I am 26 weeks right now and baby is doing good. I can tell a difference in stopping my medication. All of my symptoms are back with a vengeance and I have new ones as well. I am definitely not one of the lucky ones who goes into remission while pregnant :( I've never been in so much pain. I would not trade this for anything though!

Anyone have difficulty conceiving due to their PsA/autoimmune issues?

PNfreeNmyDREAMS....were your symptoms under control before you got pregnant? How long were you off meds before?

My old rheumatologist that I saw before i moved said that he would not prescribe methotrexate to me because I was in my reproductive years and I guess it can make it very difficult to become pregnant even after you have discontinued. So he tried other medications that I could easily just stop taking once I found out I was pregnant. So my advice or what I would do in your situation is look at other alternatives besides that medication since you are wanting to start a family so soon. A good safe time to quit a medication before ttc is usually 6 months prior anyway. I am pregnant and am not on any medication. I have not taken anything since before I became pregnant, except Predforte for my recurring iritis. I still have really bad days and other days I feel great. Either way, you'll be growing a healthy baby and it is all worth the pain... Good luck! And congratulations on planning a family! :)
